  • Wise Children - Old Vic Theatre

During her lifetime, Angela Carter penned some important works that cemented her legacy long after her death. Her last novel was 1991’s Wise Children, focusing on elderly twin sisters and the range of factors that rock their families and history, and it now heads to the Old Vic Theatre in London under the direction of Emma Rice.

It is a story that has resonated with audiences since the early 1990s and Emma Rice’s adaptation will bring it to a new generation of theatregoers in the capital.

The mentioned elderly twin sisters in Wise Children are Dora and Nora Chance, who are celebrating their birthday when we meet them and their big day highlights the twists of their family and instigates a trip down memory lane. Dora and Nora share a birthday with their 100-year-old father and his twin brother, the latter being the presumed-dead legal guardian of Dora. The plot also deals with the arrival of their brother Tristram, whose wife Tiffany is missing.

So there is a lot to take in with Wise Children, with its twists and turns compared to the work of Shakespeare and its memorable characters staying with audiences long after the final page (or, in this case, curtain call).

Angela Carter’s back catalogue of books made her one of the most admired authors of the 20th century, from the award-winning Night At The Circus to early works like Magic Toyshop and Several Perceptions. As such she has many fans and her stories still have a power that will be evident at the Old Vic in late 2018.

Wise Children runs at the Old Vic Theatre from Monday 8th October 2018.
