“So much happened before Dorothy dropped in”.
This is the captivating tagline presented by the team behind “Wicked”, the story that fills audiences in on the wonderful Land of Oz long before Dorothy and Toto arrived from their Kansas home.
An exciting prequel story to L Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz”, “Wicked” introduces us to iconic characters as they embark on life defining moments that will shape their future selves and the later events of their world.
Two unlikely friends are at the heart of the story, who are unknowingly laying the foundation blocks to a future of conflict and treachery. One of them is Glinda, a beautiful and popular girl with big ambitions and the book smarts to go far in life. The other is Elphaba, a girl who is unfortunate enough not to have been blessed with such positive attributes; instead she has green skin and an ugly appearance, with her only redeeming side being high intelligence.
It is from these humble beginnings that school friends make a transition from playground rivals to ultimate foes in the Land of Oz. The pair will one day make a big impression on Dorothy and take the form of Glinda The Good Witch and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.
“Wicked” has taken audiences by storm on both side of the pond, winning many admirers when it was first seen on Broadway; a success story that was continued when it first appeared on the stage of the Apollo Victoria Theatre in September 2006. It is no wonder, with so many people around the world still captivated by the original movie of “The Wizard of Oz”, based on L Frank Baum’s novel and taking audiences on a magical journey in the hands of Judy Garland.
The prequel idea was first presented in Gregory Maguire’s novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, with composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz deciding on a musical version in 1996. It meant that it wouldn’t be long before a worldwide sensation would be born.
When it first appeared on Broadway in 2003, the New York Times was quick to call the production “Broadway’s Biggest Blockbuster”. It went on to pick up Tony Awards and break countless box office records with productions springing up all around the world.
