A wide range of hit shows open in the capital year after year but one of the latest, coming to the Adelphi Theatre in 2019, has already proven a huge success on American shores, earning its creators widespread praise and providing audiences with a memorable good time.
That show is Waitress, a story that takes theatregoers on a rollercoaster ride, and it is set for a West End run that will have to be seen to be believed. With the main character going on an important journey, toe-tapping musical numbers and direction from the acclaimed Diane Paulus, it will be one of the capital’s most unmissable events when it opens in the New Year.
Waitress centres on the character of Jenna Hunterson, a woman living in a small town. We meet her at her lowest ebb at the beginning of the show as her abusive marriage has led her astray and she tries to make ends meet by working as a waitress and making pies. But it is clear that she needs a big change in her life, which could come in the form of a baking competition in a new town, offering her a new opportunity in a new location.
Along the way, theatregoers experience musical numbers penned by Sara Bareilles, such as I Love You Like A Table, The Negative, Everything Changes, Opening Up and You Matter To Me, amongst a wide range of others.
With all of these ingredients coming together, it is no wonder it has been such a success on the other side of the Atlantic, with its run at New York’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre drawing in audiences and leading to numerous Tony Award nominations. So as it heads to the Adelphi Theatre audiences can expect similar spectacular results.
Waitress runs at the West End’s Adelphi Theatre from February 2019.
