2017 saw the world premiere of The Twilight Zone take to the stage of the Almeida Theatre, giving audiences a nostalgic look at one of the biggest television shows of the 1960s.
Celebrating a true classic of mystery, science fiction, fantasy and supernatural, The Twilight Zone is based on stories from the original series and managed to attract an eager audience when it played at the North London venue, so its transfer to the West End cannot come soon enough.
It plays at the Ambassadors Theatre in 2019, with Richard Jones directing from Anne Washburn’s script, adapted from the works of Rod Serling, Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont.
The Twilight Zone was created by Rod Serling, who also delivered the distinctive opening and closing monologues that defined the show, with Matheson and Beaumont amongst the regular writers of some of the classic episodes. The series also had iconic theme music that effortlessly sold the ideas of the unknown at the start of each episode, with both the music and the stories themselves now an intrinsic part of popular culture.
After all, The Twilight Zone has gone on to inspire a wealth of talented groups in the decades since it first aired. Directors like Steven Spielberg have credited its influence, whilst numerous episodes of The Simpsons have been inspired by its unique and celebrated tales. So it is no wonder audiences flocked to the Almeida Theatre to take this nostalgic trip into the unknown.
The Twilight Zone is set to appear at the West End’s Ambassadors Theatre in 2019.
