Ian Hislop and Nick Newman presents this wonderful celebration of the soldiers of the First World War, focusing specifically on the real-life satirical newspaper called The Wipers Times, in this play headed to the Arts Theatre in London’s West End.
The writers pen a script that is performed at the venue by Kevin Brewer, James Dutton, George Kemp, Dan Tetsell and Jake Morgan, with Caroline Leslie directing. It is adapted from Hislop and Newman’s own BBC film of the same name and is bound to be a big talking-point for London theatergoers during this era that marks 100 years since the war waged on.
The show takes us to Belgium during the Great War, introducing us to soldiers who find themselves in the town of Ypres (or as they pronounce it, Wipers) and it is here that they happen upon an idea that could boost moral – a satirical newspaper. After finding a printing press they battle against the odds – and their own superiors - to keep the newspaper going for years.
It is an inspiring and courageous story that has already won the hearts of audiences, making it the perfect addition to the West End.
And audiences will also recognize the names of the writers, with Ian Hislop appearing on Have I Got News For You and working as the editor of Private Eye and Nick Newman working as a satirist as well. As such it is clear that they can do justice to what is a compelling and memorable story.
The Wipers Times runs at the Arts Theatre in London’s West End from Monday 27th March 2017 (previews from Tuesday 21st March 2017).
