The stage of the Dominion Theatre is transformed into the battleground of The War Of The Worlds in 2016 as H. G. Wells’ classic story lands in the West End in the form of this exciting musical production..
For more than a century audiences have relished in the tale of attacking Martians, whether it has been the 1898 novel or the well known film adaptations. But alongside those Jeff Wayne also put together his musical version of The War Of The Worlds, originally a concept album from the 1970s that took the Wells story and told it through some memorable songs.
This stage version is based on the latter and retains Wayne’s music, whilst the composer also pens the script alongside Doreen Wayne. Meanwhile lyrics are penned by Paul Vigrass and Gary Osbourne, whilst Bob Tomson directs.
H. G. Wells’ The War Of The Worlds sees Martians, who have had their eyes on Earth for some time, invade us. With its 19th century London setting and its vision of a technologically superior species wiping us out it has become an iconic and influential piece of literature. Since then countless other pieces of fictions have postulated on similar events and audiences have relished in the numerous stories this has produced.
But with Jeff Wayne’s The War Of The Worlds, audiences can revisit the original tale. The stage musical is the natural progression from his album and the subsequent arena tours that displayed the music live. As a result, this musical is likely to attract a wide range of fans, whether they were introduced to the tale via the Wells novel or the Wayne music.
And it joins a West End that already has a wealth of popular musicals based on novels and films, with audiences flocking to see these reinterpreted works. From The Lion King to Kinky Boots, there remains plenty to see,
The War Of The Worlds, on the other hand, offers something that has stood the test of time for more than a century and is an intrinsic part of popular culture.
The anticipated production runs at the Dominion Theatre from Wednesday 17th February 2016 (previews from Monday 8th February 2016).
