Take a trip back to the early 1980s this summer with the famous literary character of Adrian Mole. Sue Townsend’s popular story of adolescence told against the backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain comes to the Menier Chocolate Factory, this time in the guise of a new musical from Jake Brunger and Pippa Cleary, with Luke Sheppard directing a talented cast of performers.
The show has already been seen outside of the capital, but now it is the turn of London theatregoers to get a look-in as the popular production sets up shop at the renowned Southwark venue.
For The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾ we meet the title character in 1981 and between then and 1982 we witness the ups and downs of his adolescence. Adrian faces many issues in his teenage years, from bullies and grown-ups to unrequited love and politics, as we witness the world through his eyes. All of this is told from the backdrop of famous events of the early decade, with Margaret Thatcher looming large over Adrian’s world.
The musical was first seen in 2015, more than three decades since Sue Townsend’s book was published. It shows that the story still resonates with audiences, who have flocked to see its numerous adaptations and read its various follow-ups like sequels The Growing Pains Of Adrian Mole and The True Confessions of Adrian Albert Mole, amongst others.
This time around it is the turn of Jake Brunger and Pippa Cleary to put their spin on the classic. They have plenty of experience of bringing stand-out musicals to the stage, having earned admiration for adaptations of Treasure Island and Red Riding Hood. Their other credits include Prodigy, The Snow Gorilla and Jet Set Go! to name but a few, so the well known story is in safe hands.
And for their latest London production all eyes are on the Menier Chocolate Factory, a venue with a reputation for putting on great shows. It is arguably one of the highest profile locations outside of the West End and regularly stages shows that progress to a Theatreland stage.
The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾ runs at the Menier Chocolate Factory from Wednesday 26th July 2017 (previews from Friday 14th July 2017).
