When it comes to huge success stories amongst the shows on offer in the London theatre scene, it doesn’t get much bigger than The Railway Children. The show is soon finishing its second run of performances in the capital when it closes its doors at the King’s Cross Theatre in February and it will be doing so with plenty of sad faces as it has been a popular addition to the capital since December 2014.

But audiences still have the Christmas season to enjoy the popular adaptation of E Nesbith’s beloved story.

The production has enjoyed a long journey around the UK, from its staging at the National Railway Museum in York to its original London run at specially-designed theatre by Waterloo Station in 2010, it has been a magnet of audiences wherever it has gone.

Then again, why wouldn’t it be? After all it tells a beloved story that has captured hearts since it was first published in 1905 and still resonates with audiences today. This story focuses on the characters of Bobby, Peter and Phyllis, siblings whose lives are turned inside out following the mysterious disappearance of their father. Forced to swap their city home to the countryside of rural Yorkshire it is clear that their new lives will take some getting used to, but these new lives include new bonds and a relationship with the local railway. But the disappearance of their father still hangs over them.

During the course of the show’s run many big names have taken on the iconic role of Mr Perks, from Justin Fletcher to Martin Barrass, meaning that fans of the original text know that the show is in safe hands.

The Railway Children continues at the King’s Cross Theatre in London.
