Over the years audiences have been treated to numerous revivals of the work of Arthur Miller, the late American playwright who is often regarded as one of the most important voices of the 20th century.
In the West End, theatregoers continue to flock to his work, from All My Sons, returning to the Old Vic in 2019, to Death Of A Salesman, revived at the Noël Coward in 2015, and with that in mind anticipation grows for The Price, which heads to the Wyndham’s Theatre in 2019.
With a cast that includes David Suchet and Brendan Coyle, plus a director in Jonathan Church, this will be the show to beat in 2019 as audiences revisit characters that were changed by the Great Depression, some of whom paid a huge price for the decisions they made at the time. It previously appeared in Bath and now heads to the West End to prove that Theatreland audiences still can’t get enough of Miller’s work.
The story of The Price introduces us to the character of Victor Franz (Coyle) and we meet him 30 years after he made a life-changing decision at the hands of the Great Depression. He chose not to attend college and instead look after his father and now we find him selling his parent’s estate and sorting through their furniture, whilst interacting with characters like his successful brother Walter (Adrian Lukis), his wife Esther (Sara Stewart) and an antique dealer Gregory Solomon (Suchet).
Theatregoers first saw The Price when it premiered in New York in 1968 and found itself on the receiving end of numerous Tony Award nominations. Since then it has been revived numerous times with some well known names stepping into the lead roles across the United States.
Its current revival in the UK originated in Bath and its run at the Wyndham’s Theatre retains its own star cast, including David Suchet who is best known for TV’s Poirot but has also appeared in numerous West End productions. In addition to Arthur Miller’s All My Sons at the Apollo Theatre in 2010 he has also appeared in the Wyndham’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night, the Vaudeville’s The Importance Of Being Earnest and the Harold Pinter Theatre’s The Lover / Collection, as part of the Pinter At The Pinter Season in 2018.
The Price runs at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End from Monday 11th February 2019 (with previews from Tuesday 5th February 2019).
