As the Trafalgar Studios heads into April it turns its attentions away from the acclaimed production of Buried Child and welcomes the work of Christopher Hampton as his classic play The Philanthropist opens at the larger Studio 1. As with Buried Child, the Whitehall venue will be playing host to a show with some well known names attached to lead roles, whilst a veteran performer takes on directing duties.

With these names attached, plus a story that has been enjoyed for more than 40 years, it is bound to be an audience-pleaser when it opens early in the month.

After all, if the work of Christopher Hampton returning to the capital isn’t enough to entice London theatregoers from around the country then surely the presence of the renowned Simon Callow as director will do the trick. The acclaimed performer and director has been a London theatre regular for decades and will provide a wonderful vision for Hampton’s classic work.

The characters at the heart of The Philanthropist are Philip, a philology professor, Donald, his best friend, Celia, his fiancé, Braham, a writer, plus Liz and Araminta. Their story takes us to a University campus, beginning in a tutorial room and then continuing on to a dinner party hosted by Philip. As some major events shape the country in the background, we remain in the bubble of University life as the evening takes on an unexpected form, digging up some uncomfortable truths that they will have to face the next morning.

The character of Philip will be portrayed by Simon Bird, who many well immediately recognise for his work on the television and film series The Inbetweeners, in addition to Friday Night Dinner. Meanwhile, Braham will also be portrayed by someone well known to the television comedy world as Matt Berry takes on the role, with audiences recognising him from The Mighty Boosh, Toast Of London, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, House Of Fools and The IT Crowd, to name but a few.

They are joined by Lily Cole as Araminta, Tom Rosenthal as Donald and Charlotte Ritchie as Celia.

So if you are in the mood for a classic show brought to the stage by some of the biggest names in comedy and theatre, then The Philanthropist at the Trafalgar Studios 1 should do the trick. It runs at the Whitehall venue from Thursday 20th April 2017 (previews from Monday 3rd April 2017).
