In recent times we have been witness to some stand-out stories from writer Martin McDonagh, from The Cripple Of Inishmaan to films like In Bruges, but the from June 2018 we can revisit one of his most celebrated plays as it makes a welcome return to a London stage.
The Lieutenant Of Inishmore, with television and film star Aiden Turner in a lead role, will play at the Noel Coward Theatre and will prove to audiences why McDonagh is one of the most celebrated writers of this century.
The show also boasts a director in the acclaimed Michael Grandage, who directed Daniel Radcliffe in The Cripple Of Inishmaan (the first part in the unifinished Aran Islands trilogy of which this is a part) at the same venue in 2013. The acclaimed director has helmed a wealth of shows across the capital and also directs Red at the Wyndham’s Theatre in 2018.
But with The Lieutenant Of Inishmore he tackles a subject that takes audiences to Ireland in the early 1990s when the Northern Irish peace talks were in their infancy. The main character is a main named Padraic and he is a member of the IRA splinter group the INLA. But he has a penchant for intense violence and tactics that are hard to fathom for some and we learn this as he heads back to his home island of Inishmore to follow up on the news of the death of his cat.
It is a darkly comedic story that has resonated with audiences ever since it was first staged in London back in 2001. With its shocking main character and an electrifying topic it has captured imaginations and cemented McDonagh’s place at the top of the pile with it comes to acclaimed playwrights.
And with that in mind it is no wonder that Michael Grandage turns to a talented actor like Aiden Turner to portray the main character of Padraic. The well known actor is famous for television’s Poldark and Being Human, and the big screen’s Hobbit trilogy, but he is also known for some acclaimed stage roles in the UK and Ireland, including the Barbican Theatre’s The Plough And The Stars.
He is a perfect choice to bring life to Padraic on a West End stage and with such a talented creative team working behind the scene as well, this will be a must-see in London’s West End.
The Lieutenant Of Inishmore runs at the Noel Coward Theatre from Saturday 23rd June 2018.
