2018 will bring a host of new shows to the capital in addition to various revivals and amongst them will be one of the most talked about shows of recent years – The King And I. This transfer of a recent Broadway success story ensures continued reverence for the original Rodgers and Hammerstein musical whilst also introducing a new generation of theatregoers to the classic story of Anna and the King of Siam.
And that’s not all; The King And I will also bring its Broadway cast to London, meaning that audiences will have the chance to see Kelli O’Hara and Ken Watanabe as Anna and the King. Both are experienced performers who had great success in the Broadway production, earning well-deserved praise, and their presence in London is a major coup for London theatregoers.
But then, The King And I is already a massive draw thanks to its creative team. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II were musical theatre legends, teaming up to create some of the most iconic shows of the 20th century, from Carousel and Oklahoma! to South Pacific and The Sound Of Music. But amongst the hits was this adaptation of the Margaret Landon novel Anna And The King Of Siam, which turned many heads when it first appeared on Broadway and in the West End in the 1950s.
With awards success and various revivals it now returns to the capital with a run at the London Palladium and it is here that audiences will experience the story of the King of Siam as he makes attempts to modernise his country by bringing in the British schoolteacher, Anna.
Their relationship together has its ups and downs but there is a love story brewing under the surface that has made this story unforgettable across the decades, whilst their plans fall apart. Add some wonderful musical numbers to the mix and it is easy to see why The King And I is revered all these decades since its premiere.
So as 2018 brings us a host of new shows, one must-see production is a returning classic as The King And I runs at the West End’s London Palladium.
