The work of Florian Zeller returns to the West End with The Height Of The Storm playing at the Wyndham’s Theatre and starring Jonathan Pryce and Eileen Atkins.
In recent years we have been witness to some stand-out shows from writer Florian Zeller, including The Father, The Truth and The Lie, and these have served to make him one of the most enticing writers working in the modern day. So the news that his latest show, The Height Of The Storm, is headed to the capital is naturally met with great anticipation.
The French writer’s work is regularly translated for UK audiences by Christopher Hampton and this is true for his latest as well. Hampton, of course, lends his hand to many translations and adaptations in the capital and he is one of many familiar names attached to the production as it heads to the Wyndham’s Theatre.
Another is director Jonathan Kent, who has had success on both sides of the Atlantic and has directed shows like The Seagull at the National Theatre in 2016 and A Long Day’s Journey Into Night at Broadway’s American Airlines Theatre, also in 2016.
But The Height Of The Storm sees him direct both Jonathan Pryce and Dame Eileen Atkins as André and Madeleine, whose world is shaken 50 years into their relationship. Their status quo is interrupted one weekend with an unexpected arrival in the form of a present and, later, a person, causing introspection, doubt and great turmoil.
Those performers are great choices to bring life to these characters as they have both amassed experience around the world on the stage and screen. Jonathan Pryce might be best known for his performances in the Pirates Of The Caribbean film series, the Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies or the film version of Glengarry Glen Ross, however he has also accumulated an impressive list of stage credits. The same is true for Eileen Atkins, whose work has included The Witch Of Edmonton at the Swan Theatre in 2014 and films like Paddington 2.
And now they head to the Wyndham’s Theatre for The Height Of The Storm, which runs from Tuesday 9th October 2018 (previews from Tuesday 2nd October 2018). The show also tours venues in Richmond, Cambridge and Bath prior to its West End run.
