A crisis of identity is witnessed on the stage of the Old Vic Theatre as director Richard Jones revisits Eugene O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape. As part of the inaugural season of shows from the venue’s new Artistic Director Matthew Warchus, it joins some great choices that will surely make this season a must-see.
The classic play, which dates back to the 1920s, introduces us to the character of Yank, a man with pride in his work who is brought back to Earth and has his eyes opened to the world around him. Yank stokes the flames of a transatlantic ocean liner and he is amongst the best, but when a young woman makes a disparaging remark about him it causes him to take on an introspective journey. He leaves his job and heads to Manhattan and when he sees the differences between the rich and the poor he causes he to re-evaluate his position amongst the world’s population.
Playwright Eugene O’Neill enjoyed a great career penning some classics of the stage. His show Long Day’s Journey Into Night stands up amongst the best of the American stage and it is one of many that have made a lasting impression on a world audiences. His work includes A Moon For The Misbegotten, The Iceman Cometh, Anna Christie and Beyond The Horizon, with many of his works landing him the coveted Pulitzer Prize.
And this time his work is seen through the eyes of director Jones whose previous hits have included Anna Nicole The Opera at the Royal Opera House, Government Inspector at the Young Vic Theatre, Tales From The Vienna Woods at the National Theatre and Holy Mothers at the Royal Court, to name but a few.
Alongside Future Conditional and Dr Seuss’s The Lorax, as part of the opening season for Matthew Warchus, The Hair Ape appears at the Old Vic Theatre in 2015.
