Over the years the Bristol Old Vic has transferred an array of shows to London’s West End, ensuring that the venue stands up alongside the Theatre Royal Bath, the Menier Chocolate Factory and the Chichester Festival, amongst others, in providing a good place to witness future Theatreland hits.

In 2016 audiences were able to do just that as they flocked to see the new musical The Grinning Man, which now makes the journey to London as it plays at the Trafalgar Studios.

This show received a positive reception in Bristol and now it comes to the West End to repeat that success as it replaces the outgoing Apologia at the Whitehall venue, providing a change of pace for the location as it heads into the New Year season.

Director Tom Morris and performer Louis Maskell tackle a story inspired by Victor Hugo’s classic text The Man Who Laughs, a story that has been adapted on many occasions over the last century with feature films and stage productions entertaining audiences across the decades. Now, however, it comes to London as a fantastic new musical with some unique visuals and imaginative songs.

It also means that there will be two shows in the capital that are plucked from the pages of Victor Hugo – the other being Les Misérables – and so this is a great time to be a fan of the French author visiting the West End.

The story of The Grinning Man centres in on the character of Grinpayne (inspired by the original novel’s Gwynplaine) and he is a newcomer at the Stokes Croft fair, causing a stir with the locals who are mystified by his disfigured face. Bandages cover his scarred mouth and during the course of the show he attracts a lot of attention as he teams with colourful characters for a memorable tale.

Louis Maskell has already earned praise for his work as Grinpayne so it is only right that he is at the forefront of the show in the West End. The performer has previously accumulated experience from touring musicals and audiences might recognise him from nationwide versions of Scrooge and West Side Story, amongst others.

So make sure you catch The Grinning Man as it brings puppetry, spectacular designs and memorable performances to the Trafalgar Studios 1. It runs at the Whitehall venue in London’s West End from Monday 18th December 2017 (with previews from Tuesday 5th December 2017).
