Year after year some stand-out musicals appear that feature some of the best known names around and this is no different for 2016 as we turn out attention to the biggest name in musical theatre as he returns for a West End premiere.

The musical is The Go-Between, based on the novel by L. P. Hartley, and the performer is Michael Crawford, whose career has seen him appear in some of the most famous musicals in the capital, including The Phantom Of The Opera,  for which he was a part of the original cast.

For The Go-Between, Crawford tackles the character of Leo Colton who, in Hartley’s novel, is a man in his 60s who suddenly remembers a period in his life when he was much younger at the turn of the 20th century. Leo had originally blocked out these memories and it comes back to him by surprise when he looks through his belongings and happens upon his old diary. As a result we flashback to his time in Norfolk with his family, events that shaped him as he found himself acting as a go-between for a tenant farmer named Ted and Marian, a member of the upper classes, involving him in a romantic scandal.

The original novel was released in 1953 and this musical version, which was first seen by audiences in 2011, was put together by Richard Taylor and David Wood. Together they have crafted something remarkable and now it comes to the West End as one of the many new shows to grace the capital in 2016.

And with Michael Crawford bringing to life the character of Leo audiences can be certain of a wonderful performance. This has already been proven with the actor’s extensive list of credits, including the mentioned The Phantom Of The Opera, which earned him a Laurence Olivier Award in 1986, and Barnum, which landed him the accolade in 1981. He has also found success across the Atlantic, where audiences have also responded positively to his work.

So his return to the West End will be met with great enthusiasm, which is why his fans will be sure to see The Go-Between when it runs at the Apollo Theatre from Tuesday 7th June 2016 (previews from Friday 27th May 2016).
