The latest chapter in the journey of The Exorcist, William Peter Blatty’s classic horror, is this stage production that now makes its way to London’s West End. Sean Mathias directs one of the all-time classics as it makes the transition to the stage following successful ventures on the page and the screen.

The original novel was released in 1971 and was the latest by the already-successful writer William Peter Blatty, who had made enough money from a 1961 game show appearance to work full time as a writer, penning novels and screenplays in the 1960s before putting pen to paper on what would become a classic.

He later adapted his own work in the 1973 film version directed by William Friedkin and not only did that win awards and fans, it also caused great controversy that ensured it would remain in the public eye for decades to come. It means that now, in the second half of the 2010s, it still has an effect on those that dare to watch it.

And this will be true for the stage version as well, as West End audiences witness the story of Regan, whose changes prompt worry from her mother as she exhausts a manner of methods to determine the cause of her problems. But when it is clear that demonic possession is the answer, the only thing left is to call upon priests, with Father Damien arriving on the scene to provide an exorcism that is horrifying and traumatising, undoubtedly staying with audiences for some time to come.

The West End is no stranger to horror, of course, with The Woman In Black amongst the capital’s longest running shows and other hits like Ghost Stories appearing over the years. They prove that there is a large audience for visceral thrills and now The Exorcist will take pride of place amongst them as it adds an element of fear to the West End during the dark winter months.

The Exorcist, under the direction of Sean Mathias, runs at the West End’s Phoenix Theatre from Friday 20th October 2017. It follows Evita, the brief revival of which runs during the summer of 2017.
