In 2012 audiences headed to the Cottesloe National Theatre (since renamed the Dorfman) to witness the stage adaptation of Mark Haddon’s novel The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night Time with Luke Treadaway in the lead role. Since then that production has become the latest in a long-line of National Theatre shows to get the West End treatment, following in the footsteps of hits like War Horse, which later transferred to the New London Theatre.
After its runs at the National Theatre, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time played in the West End at both the Apollo and Gielgud Theatre, but sadly closed its doors in June 2017. Now it makes a triumphant return to the capital with a run at the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre for the Christmas season, giving new audiences a chance to witness the acclaimed tale unfold.
Mark Haddon’s story focuses on the character of Christopher, a teenager with behavioural problems who has discovered the dead body of Mrs Shears’ dog. He decides he must solve the mystery of the dog’s death and in doing so not only will he ease the curiosity bubbling up from the crime, he will also exonerate himself. After all, it was Christopher himself that was found next to the crime scene in the first place.
The original novel on which it is based was first published in 2003 and it won many awards upon its release. Not only has it spawned this stage adaptation it has also sparked interest in a movie version as well, though updates on this are scarce in 2018. The stage version, however, has won praise and enough attention to lead to this West End transfer in addition to a screening on cinema screens as part of National Theatre Live.
And its continued success is guaranteed with the return of its impressive director and a talented cast treading the boards at the Piccadilly Theatre. New audiences and those already familiar with the play will undoubtedly be delighted in the return of a much admired show.
The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time begins performances at the Piccadilly Theatre on Thursday 29th November 2018.
