For the first time in its 60-year existence, Gore Vidal’s political play The Best Man finally makes its way to London’s West End.

Over the years the capital has welcomed various shows of a political nature, from James Graham’s This House and The Vote to Peter Morgan’s Frost/Nixon, but Vidal’s insight into the US Presidential Primary process has not set foot in London.

But all of this changes from February 2018 as director Simon Evans brings the production to the Playhouse Theatre, ready to introduce London theatergoers to the scrupulous characters that have captured the attentions of audiences on the other side of the Atlantic.

Martin Shaw plays William Russell in the production, with the primaries taking place to determine a political party’s nominee in the US Presidential Election. But to take his spot at the top of the ticket he is going to have to beat his rival Joseph Cantwell (Jeff Fahey) and considering how close the polls are looking, it is going to be a tight race.

With that in mind audiences with knowledge of US election seasons can expect some familiar situations as some big players enter the season, mud gets slung and endorsement are sought.

Shaw and Fahey aren’t the only performers confirmed for the production, with both Glynis Barber and Honeysuckle Weeks as the candidate’s wives, Jack Shepherd cast as a former President and the acclaimed Maureen Lipman appearing as a veteran of the party.

Those are some top names and they will be certain to draw fans to the West End. However, the name of Gore Vidal will ensure a level of pedigree that will make this show stand out even further. The late political commentator, novelist and playwright had an enormously influential career in the spotlight, making him one of the most respected political voices of the 20th century. The Best Man is part of that that legacy, appearing on numerous occasions on the other side of the Atlantic during the last few decades and now finds its rightful place in the West End.

The Best Man makes its anticipated appearance at the Playhouse Theatre from Monday 5th March 2018 (with previews from Saturday 24th February 2018).
