With every new jukebox musical comes great excitement, not only from West End theatregoers, but also from fans of some of the world’s biggest bands and solo artists.
With that in mind it is no wonder audiences are already anticipating one of this year’s latest – The Band. Celebrating the work of hit boyband Take That, it tells a story of friendship and growing-up in the 1990s, whilst the hit songs of the group are showcased by some talented performers and musicians. It’s sure to make The Band one of the most talked-about shows of 2018, keeping people flocking to the Theatre Royal Haymarket.
The production, of course, arrives in the West End in a year that also welcomes Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, showing that audiences haven’t lost their appetites for jukebox musicals. It also joins the returning Bat Out Of Hell The Musical and ongoing hits like Thriller Live and Mamma Mia!
The story introduces us to a group of friends – five teenage girls – and we explore their relationships with one another, particularly as it relates to their favourite boy band, whom they follow through thick and thin. We catch up with the girls in adulthood, almost three decades later, as they reunite with their love of the band once again and strive to meet them.
Along the way, we hear renditions of songs like Relight My Fire, Never Forget, Greatest Day and The Flood, amongst many others.
The show is the work of Tim Firth, a highly experienced writer whose work has been seen in the West End on numerous occasions, penning Calendar Girls and its musical update The Girls (the latter with Take That’s Gary Barlow), plus Our House and This Is My Family, to name but a few. He is a great choice to pen this latest blockbuster musical heading to London’s West End.
The show is directed by Kim Gavin and stars the likes of AJ Bentley, Nick Carsberg, Curtis T Johns, Sario Solomon and Yazsan Qafouri, amongst others.
For a brief run during the Christmas season, The Band makes its very welcome appearance at the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket from Saturday 1st December 2018.
