Audiences will take a step back in time to the 1990s for the latest play headed to the Ambassadors Theatre as they spend time in the Swiss Alps with the late author Patricia Highsmith, played by Phyllis Logan in Joanna Murray-Smith’s Switzerland.
This tense thriller has already wowed theatregoers at the Theatre Royal Bath, where it previously played in 2018, and now sets its sights on West End crowds, where it will undoubtedly attract considerable attention as Patricia Highsmith’s life becomes one of her own psychological thrillers.
Highsmith was well known in her time for penning such books between the 1950s and the 1990s, many of which are still enjoyed to this day. Amongst her most famous are those that have since been adapted to the screen such as Strangers On A Train and The Talented Mr Ripley (the latter part of a series of books known as the ‘Ripliad’), though her work also included admired books like The Glass Cell, A Dog’s Ransom and Found In The Street, amongst others.
She spent her later years living in Switzerland and this is where we meet her in Joanna Murray-Smith’s play, retreating to the Swiss Alps and relishing in the solitude it provides her after a career in the spotlight. It is 1995 and this solitude is broken by the arrival of a New York publisher (Calum Findlay), who wishes for her to pen a new book in the ‘Ripliad’ series featuring Tom Ripley. There’s a darkness to this new arrival, however, and this darkness could hide a secret agenda.
This tense and memorable story has ensured it has attracted audiences worldwide since it was first staged in Australia in 2014 and it is no wonder it is making its way to one of the theatre capital’s of the world, with Phyllis Logan reprising her role as Patricia Highsmith from Bath. Logan is known mostly for television work such as Downton Abbey, though she has also appeared onstage in shows like Present Laughter at the Theatre Royal Bath and Marvin’s Room at North London’s Hampstead Theatre.
So she has plenty of experience to bring to the role as she performs in Switzerland at the Ambassadors Theatre from Monday 19th November 2018 (previews from Saturday 10th November 2018).
