With the Theatre Royal Haymarket welcoming an array of anticipated shows this year, from The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? to the upcoming Queen Anne, the venue will briefly become the home of a touring production starring the acclaimed Edward Fox for one week only at the end of May.
Sand In The Sandwiches allows audiences to spend time with poet John Betjeman as Fox brings him to the stage in a one-man play and recounts details of his life and work, from childhood to literary success.
Sir John Betjeman was one of the most celebrated poets of the 20th century, emerging as one of Britain’s top literary talents. Not only was he given the title of Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom in his later years, he was also granted the title Knight Bachelor. Sand In The Sandwiches will honour his legacy with accounts from his life as West End audiences go through a compelling and memorable journey.
His poems had a satirical bent to them and audiences fell in love with his style, wit and ideas, allowing his legacy to live on in 2017, more than 30 years since he died in 1984.
And it is this legacy that means an actor of the stature of Edward Fox has been recruited to bring him to the stage. Fox is a veteran of the stage and screen, having appeared in the West End on numerous occasions in recent years, including playing Winston Churchill in The Audience at the Gielgud Theatre. He is also known for films like The Day Of The Jackal.
With shows like Queen Anne, Love’s Labour’s Lost and The Goat, Or Who Is Sylia? appearing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket this year, Sand In The Sandwiches makes a brief appearance from Tuesday 30th May 2017.
