2017 brings many new shows to the capital but the one heading to the Duke of York’s Theatre already boasts a legion of admirers thanks to its acclaimed appearances at venues across the UK. Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour has won over theatregoers in Scotland and also made a big impression at the National Theatre, but now it is the turn of West End audiences to get a look-in as the production sets up shop in Theatreland.
With director Vicky Featherstone and producer Sonia Friedman, Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour already has a high pedigree of talent working to bring it to life, but when you add the name Lee Hall to the mix it only gets better. Hall’s best known work in the capital in recent years is the hit Billy Elliot The Musical and as that closed its doors in 2016 Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour will be the perfect antidote for audiences missing its presence.
The story takes audiences to the Scottish capital, where a group of Catholic girls from the small town of Oban arrive with twenty four hours to spare. With a whole city in their hands they make the most of it as a coming-of-age story about friendship unfolds. Across a single day we witness as they go through the myriad of emotions that life can throw at them in a story that has won over critics and audiences in equal measure.
The production also boasts some memorable musical numbers, many of which are from Electric Light Orchestra, but also other 20th century artists and classical musicians, making for an unforgettable evening at the theatre.
Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour was adapted by Lee Hall from Alan Warner’s 1998 book The Sopranos and is the latest in a long line of stand-out shows from the writer. Hall was not only behind Billy Elliot The Musical (adapted from his own film) but also the hits Shakespeare In Love and The Pitmen Painters, so his work is always welcome on a West End stage.
Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour runs at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Monday 15th May 2017 (previews from Tuesday 9th May 2017).
