Ask someone to name one of the greatest sitcoms of recent decades and most will undoubtedly turn to the late John Sullivan’s classic Only Fools And Horses, which followed the characters of Del Boy and Rodney between 1981 and 1991. The show has legions of fans, who still tune-in to reruns of the programme and enjoy its numerous one-off specials that have graced the screens in the intervening years, so any new incarnation is bound to be met with great anticipation.
Enter Paul Whitehouse, who has teamed with Sullivan’s son Jim to put together Only Fools And Horses The Musical, with Whitehouse himself stepping into the role of Grandad. The show features Tom Bennett as Del Boy and Ryan Hutton as Rodney, plus performances from Dianne Pilkington and Pippa Duffy.
In Only Fools And Horses, the focus was on the exploits of Del Boy and Rodney Trotter, with money making schemes, dodgy merchandise and their three-wheeler yellow van emblazoned with the logo ‘Trotters Independent Traders’, across Peckham, South-East London. Other characters include Grandad, Uncle Albert in later series, Cassandra, Raquel, Trigger and Boycie, amongst others.
To call it a British institution would be an understatement, so it requires deft hands to bring it back to life on the stage, so the presence of Jim Sullivan on the writing team ensures audiences should embrace this with open arms. Add Paul Whitehouse, a British comedian with decades in the spotlight, and you have the recipe for success.
Whitehouse is best known for his myriad characters on the sketch show The Fast Show, which ran in the 1990s, though he has also worked on shows like Harry Enfield And Chums, Harry & Paul, Happiness and Mortimer And Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, amongst others. With The Fast Show he was responsible for portraying some of the best known characters, including Ron Manager and Ted, the latter of whom he revived for a full length special as well.
So he is a great choice to write and star in this anticipated musical. Only Fools And Horses, under the direction of Caroline Jay Ranger, runs at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Tuesday 19th February 2019 (previews from Saturday 9th February 2019).
