Audiences will once again get an opportunity to visit the romantic story of Miss Saigon as the Vietnam-set musical returns to the West End 25 years since it premiered here in 1989. The new production will be directed by Laurence Connor and takes centre stage at the Prince Edward Theatre, formerly the home of Jersey Boys.
The original production managed to attract a large crowd at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane thanks to a compelling story and wonderful, Laurence Olivier Award-winning performances. It also found itself on the other side of the Atlantic with a Tony Award-winning run on Broadway. So its return to London is one that will be met with abundant anticipation.
Audiences taking their seats in the auditorium of the Prince Edward Theatre will be treated to a great story and musical numbers that range from Let Me See His Western Nose and The Movie In My Mind to Fall Of Saigon, I’d Give My Life To You, I Still Believe Him, This Is The Hour and Last Night Of The World, among others.
And said story revolves around the romantic meeting between an American GI and young Vietnamese club worker. Taking its narrative cues from Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, Miss Saigon relocates the action to Saigon during the Vietnam War and it is this war-torn backdrop that frames the meeting. John, the GI, initially pays for the services of Kim, the Vietnamese girl, but soon a romance blossoms as she continues to work for the strange nightclub owner called ‘The Engineer’.
Directing the show is Laurence Connor who returns to Miss Saigon after helming a UK touring version almost a decade ago. Connor has been behind a wealth of high profile shows over the years including the 25th anniversary special The Phantom of the Opera At The Royal Albert Hall, plus touring versions of various West End hits. So Miss Saigon is in safe hands as it makes its way back to Theatreland for an undoubtedly successful run of performances in 2014.
Taking up the space left behind by the long-running Jersey Boys, Miss Saigon opens at the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre on Saturday 3rd May 2014.
