In 2010 the Peacock Theatre, the West End outlet for the home of dance Sadler’s Wells, welcomed an Australian spectacular that had already wowed audiences all over the world. It celebrated the world of the biggest film industry on Earth, plus the sights, sounds and stars that it encompasses. The name of the production was The Merchants Of Bollywood and it has proven to be successful enough to warrant a return to the West End in 2016, once again running at the Peacock Theatre and featuring the choreography of the renowned Vaibhavi Merchant.
Many people naturally think of Hollywood as the world’s biggest movie scene, but around the world in India is one that is regularly championed as the largest – Bollywood – and the productions that is has created over the years have begun to get a huge Western following. So it is no wonder that The Merchants Of Bollywood has proven to be such a big draw and it is likely that audiences picking up dance tickets to witness the action first hand will not be leaving the Peacock Theatre disappointed.
But then it does feature an array of memorable feats, from awe-inspiring dance moves displayed by talented and determined performers (and choreographed by Merchant) to toe-tapping musical numbers and celebrations of the biggest Bollywood stars.
Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant has carved out a career in the industry that few could dream of, with credits that have earned her a host of awards and nominations, including a nomination for an Academy Award in 2001 for her work in the movie Lagaan. The granddaughter of the legendary choreographer Shri B. Hiralal she has worked for movies such as Dil Bole Hadippa, Band Baaja Baaraat, Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai, Neal n’ Nikki and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, among others, with hundreds of credits in total.
So it is a great year to be witnessing the best of dance in London, with both the Peacock Theatre and Sadler’s Wells gearing up to welcome some acclaimed acts. Into The Hoods: REMIXED appears at the Peacock early in the year, whilst Sadler’s Wells will be displaying acts such as the English National Ballet’s She Said.
