The West End becomes the home of the hit Broadway musical Memphis from 2014 as Beverley Knight swaps The Bodyguard for a show inspired by a true story that takes audiences back to the early Civil Rights era of the 1950s.

Memphis has been lined up to appear at the Shaftesbury Theatre, where those withtheatre tickets will be eager to see how the production made such an impression on the other side of the Atlantic. Its Broadway run was a big success – with four Tony Awards to its name - and it demonstrated the appeal in such a story going out in front of a large audiences.

The story introduces us to 50s radio DJ Huey – based on the real life DJ Dewey Phillips – as he works alongside the singer Felicia to introduce a new sound to audiences. Felicia already works the clubs of Tennessee but her relationship with Huey could change her whole world. But is Memphis, and by extension the world, ready for this? After all, many are yet to be introduced to African-American music and there’s no telling how people will react.

The musical numbers include the likes of Steal Your Rock ‘n’ Roll, Say A Prayer and Everybody Wants To Be Black On A Saturday Night, plus many more.

Beverley Knight is a renowned artist whose legacy is secured by her numerous chart hits and albums releases. She is known for singles like Shoulda Woulda Coulda, Greatest Day, Come As You Are and Round And Around, among others, plus albums like Who I Am, Affirmation, Music City Soul, 100% and Soul UK. However, her most profile work in the last year or so is surely with West End musical theatre; she made her debut in The Bodyguard at the Adelphi Theatre and continues to wow audiences as she heads into Memphis at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

The production replaces the production From Here To Eternity, based on the novel and movie of the same name, at the venue and is the latest in a long line of west end shows to have their basis on Broadway.

Memphis runs at the West End’s Shaftesbury Theatre from Thursday 23rd October 2014 (previews from Thursday 9th October 2014).
