Audiences can take a trip back in time at the Apollo Theatre as they revisit one of Terence Rattigan’s 1940s plays in the West End. Love In Idleness, first seen in 1944, introduces us to the comic disagreements between a man and his mother’s new love interest, all set against the backdrop of the ongoing Second World War.
The story focuses on the characters of Michael (Edward Bluemel), Olivia (Eve Best) and Sir John Fletcher (Anthony Head) as Michael returns home to some unexpected news. With the Second World War in full swing, the left winger has been in Canada and on his return discovers that Olivia, his mother, is now seeing Sir John Fletcher, an MP and businessman. Olivia soon sees what happens when you put competing viewpoints and personalities in the same room!
The cast also includes Vivienne Rochester and Nicola Sloane and as they work under the direction of Trevor Nunn audiences know that they are in safe hands. The acclaimed director is perhaps one of the most renowned in the United Kingdom and his work has included some of the biggest shows in the capital throughout the decades of his career.
Likewise, the cast has also accumulated considerable success, with Anthony Head well known for his television work and Eve Best the winner of the Olivier Award for Hedda Gabler at the Duke of York’s Theatre. Meanwhile, their co-star Edward Bluemel is an up-an-coming star who has already appeared in shows like The Halcyon, Holby City, the 2017 film Access All Areas and stage productions for the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
The show makes its way to the West End having already impressed those in attendance at the Menier Chocolate Factory, where it played earlier in 2017, with critics heaping praise on the Sir Trevor Nunn-directed production. As such this is going to be another show transferring from the Menier Chocolate Factory on which audiences are going to want to keep a close eye.
So make sure you catch Love In Idleness when it runs at the Apollo Theatre in London’s West End from Thursday 11th May 2017.
