  • Labour of Love - Noel Coward Theatre

This year, thanks to the General Election, politics has been on the forefront of people’s minds across the country and, just as he did during the last election, James Graham now returns with his latest play that ties into it perfectly, this time focusing on the seat of a northern constituency held by Labour. Described as a political comedy, the production is bound to have people flocking to the Noel Coward Theatre when it opens there this September.

After all, not only has Jeremy Herrin, the acclaimed director who brought us the likes of Wolf Hall and This House, been recruited to helm the production, the well known actors Martin Freeman and Sarah Lancashire are also involved, portraying lead roles on the stage. So expect this to be on the tops of people’s lists in 2017.

The story is one of differing outlooks within the world of politics as we journey away from Westminster and settle into a location in Northern England to witness the story of a Labour MP and his place in the party’s history. David Lyons MP and his agent Jean Whittaker have contrasting views on their craft, with the former favouring popularity and image and the latter having a more principled outlook, providing hilarity and philosophy throughout the show’s runtime.

And fans of James Graham’s work will feel right at home with it all. In 2015 he tied another show into the election of that year when he penned The Vote, which appeared at the Donmar Warehouse, and his career has seen him delve into other aspects of British politics as well, from Monster Raving Loony in 2016 to This House in 2013. He is a popular writer whose work has been staged at some prestigious venues, so we can expect a lot of attention when his latest work comes to the West End.

This is especially true with Martin Freeman amongst the cast members the Hobbit and Sherlock star has come a long way since playing Tim in the hit sitcom The Office, with appearances in everything from US series Fargo to Marvel film Captain America: Civil War, and will ensure plenty of eager theatregoers head to the West End this autumn.

Labour Of Love opens at the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End on Friday 15th September 2017.
