For the latest show headed to the Menier Chocolate Factory, producers have tackled the work of renowned Argentinean author Manuel Puig, whose 1976 novel Kiss Of The Spider Woman has earned many fans over the decades.
This stage adaptation is from José Rivera and Allan Baker (not to be confused with Puig’s own adaptation that appeared in the 1980s). It also boasts a director in Laurie Sansom, the former Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland, and performers in Samuel Barnett and Declan Bennett.
The story takes audiences to Buenos Aires and introduces them to the characters of Luis Albert Molina (Barnett) and Velentin Arregui Paz (Bennett), and they come from very different backgrounds, with the latter being a revolutionary figure. We witness the developing friendship between the two, against the odds, as a thought-provoking journey unfolds onstage, staying with audiences long after the final curtain call.
Puig penned the original novel and also provided the first stage adaptation prior to this one from José Rivera and Allan Baker. The exiled author also penned numerous other novels during his career, whilst also lending his craft to the stage as well, raising his profile in the process so that his legacy is cemented today, 28 years after his death.
This legacy is in safe hands with director Laurie Sansom, who has been responsible for numerous shows during an impressive career. During his tenure as Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland (2013 – 2016) he helmed shows like The James Plays and The Driver’s Seat, whilst his career has also included My Zinc Bed and other shows at Northampton’s Royal & Dergate.
So he reaches a new audience with this show at the Menier Chocolate Factory, which is a Southwark venue with an influence that extends far beyond that London borough. Many of its shows attract big names and they often transfer to the West End for further success, making it an ideal place to witness future Theatreland hits.
Kiss Of The Spider Woman plays at the venue from Wednesday 21st March 2018 (previews from Thursday 8th March 2018).
