Having depicted the Catilinarian Conspiracy in Imperim I: Conspiracy, audiences can then move on to Imperium II: Dictator, the second part in Mike Poulton’s adaptation of Robert Harris’ Cicero novels.
This time around we move on to the dictatorship of Julius Caesar and cover events like those of the Ides of March, with Richard McCable continuing to portray Cicero as he attempts to hold Rome together.
Like the first part in the series, this was a huge hit at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and managed to attract a lot of theatregoers eager to gain this insightful glimpse of the workings of the Roman political world. So its appearance at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End will continue its success.
So with the Catilinarian Conspiracy and a civil war behind Rome, Cicero initially removes himself from the situation in Dictator, as Julius Caesar rises to power and the former consul laments the loss of the Republic. During the course of the show Caesar is assassinated but Cicero’s hopes of a brighter future are regularly dashed as his own influence – and his own life – reaches a tragic end.
Audiences have come to expect great things from writer Mike Poulton, who has a history of bringing acclaimed period-pieces to the capital, particularly those adapted from a book. With the Cicero series he has once again proven himself one of the most exciting voices in the capital and thanks to director Gregory Doran his work has been translated into a gripping and powerful piece.
This can also be applied to the show’s performers, who have previously had success on the stage. Richard McCabe, as Cicero, brings many years of experience to the role and even earned both an Olivier and Tony Award for his work in Peter Morgan’s The Audience, also at the Gielgud Theatre. Across many decades he has proven himself a versatile and unmissable actor both on the stage and the screen.
So now he brings Cicero to life in the West End, portraying the Roman politician in Imperium II: Dictator at the Gielgud Theatre for performances from Thursday 21st June 2018. (Imperium I: Conspirator also runs from Thursday 14th June 2018).
