Between 2006 and 2015 writer Robert Harris released the three books in his Cicero trilogy, entitled Imperium, Lustrum and Dictator, depicting the fortunes of the Roman politician Cicero and featuring other real life figures of history such as Catiline and Julius Caesar, amongst others.
The popularity of the series led to a stand-out stage adaptation told in two parts. Imperium I: Conspirator and Imperium II: Dictator played at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2017 and now it is the turn of West End audiences to experience these tales of Roman political struggle as both shows head to the Gielgud Theatre this June.
The first of the two shows, Conspirator, begins in 70 BC and during the course of proceedings we will witness how Cicero rises to power as consul, much to the horror of Catiline. The story is told from the perspective of Cicero’s secretary Tiro and depicts the Catilinarian conspiracy that seeks to remove the government from its pedestal. It covers events that appear across Harris’ books, leading to the year 58 BC and providing audiences with Roman political one-upmanship in a winding and epic tale.
Richard McCabe plays Cicero, reprising the role from Stratford-upon-Avon and bringing his acclaimed performance for the Royal Shakespeare Company to a new audience.
McCabe is a great choice to bring Cicero to life in the 21st century, more than 2,050 years since the politician’s death in 43 BC. He is an Olivier and Tony Award-winning actor whose career spans decades, previously appearing at the Gielgud Theatre in The Audience (winning the Olivier on these shores and a Tony when it transferred to New York) and Yes, Prime Minister. His other credits include Fortune’s Fool at the Old Vic and The Real Inspector Hound at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester.
He plays Cicero in both shows at the Gielgud Theatre, playing the part in Conspirator from June to September and concurrently in its sequel show Dictator. Both shows provide audiences with an unmissable portrayal of Roman politics as penned by Mike Poulton and adapted from Robert Harris’ novels.
Imperium I: Conspirator, directed by Gregory Doran, makes its anticipated appearance in the West End with a run at the Gielgud Theatre from Thursday 14th June 2018.
