The Charing Cross Theatre in London is the new home of the classic story Harold And Maude, the darkly comic tale that first appeared in front of audiences as a 1971 film and was subsequently adapted to the stage.
It is one of many films-turned-stage shows in the capital, with others like The Lion King and The Exorcist entertaining audiences in 2018, but Harold And Maude will provide a unique experience that will stay with audiences long after the final bow.
Sheila Hancock takes on the role of Maude in the production, whilst directing duties fall upon Thom Southerland. Together they will revisit a story that has grown in stature since its first appearance over 40 years ago so that it is now regarded as a classic, whilst being a favourite of film fans around the world.
That story centres on the young death-obsessed Harold, who strikes a bond with the elderly Maude and it is through this relationship that we see Harold’s view of the world and how his obsession with suicide manifests itself.
The script was penned by Colin Higgins and he himself adapted it for the stage as well, with many appearances in numerous venues since its debut in New York in 1980.
Over the years many names have inhabited the character of Maude, including Ruth Gordon in the original film, but now it is Sheila Hancock who will embody the role. She is an acclaimed performer with awards under her belt and a range of credits to her name, with recent appearances in the likes of Barking In Essex at the Wyndham’s Theatre and others. Her presence will ensure that fans of Harold And Maude will be in safe hands when this makes its way to a London stage.
Harold And Maude runs at London’s Charing Cross Theatre from Monday 19th February 2018.
