A trip behind the scenes is on the menu with this staging of Terence Rattigan’s classic one-act play Harlequinade, the story of the high drama that is occurring during attempts to stage Shakespeare. It appears as part of Kenneth Branagh’s high profile residency at the Garrick Theatre, which sees a range of shows take to the stage with Branagh and other high profile performers in lead roles.

The season also includes John Osborne’s The Entertainer, Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet and The Winter’s Tale and Sean Foley’s The Painkiller. Their announcement was one of the most talked-about theatre revelations of April 2015.

In Harlequinade we witness behind the scenes of a theatre company as they put in the preparations for the latest staging of Shakespeare’s classics. Romeo & Juliet, for example, is one of the best known from the Bard’s pen, so it should be the biggest drama of the night, but it soon becomes apparent that the real drama can be found in real life. Husband and wife acting duo Arthur and Edna are faced with some complex secrets from the past and this could put the entire production in dire straits.

Terence Rattigan’s show is one of many to emerge from the writer in the 1940s, a time in which some of his best known works were seen for the first time. It was first staged at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End in the latter half of the decade and now sits alongside shows like The Browning Version (with which it was staged), The Winslow Boy, The Deep Blue Sea and Flare Path, to name but a few. The acclaimed playwright remains one of the most renowned of the 20th century and every new staging of his work in the West End in justifiably met with anticipation.

And as this production will feature Kenneth Branagh on the stage, a man well known for high quality works throughout his life, this is certain to be an unmissable event in 2015. The writer-director has worked with Shakespeare, Hollywood blockbusters and more during an impressive career.

Harlequinade appears as part of an exciting residency at the Garrick Theatre with a start date of Saturday 24th October 2015.
