The hit Broadway show Hand To God makes its way across the Atlantic so that West End theatregoers can experience this tale of a puppet come to life. The show was a huge success with American audiences, winning over critics and receiving numerous Tony Award nominations so it was inevitable that it would find its way here and it is clear that producers will be hoping for similar success.
With that in mind they have retained director Moritz von Stuelpnagel and they have recruited a cast that includes Harry Potter actor Harry Melling alongside Janie Dee, Neil Pearson, Jemima Rooper and Kevin Mains.
Together they tell Robert Askins’ story of Jason (Melling) and his mother Margery who embark upon a journey when Jason’s puppet Tyrone, created as part of a Bible School project, takes on a new life and creates its own personality. The result is a situation in which people are forced to re-evaluate themselves, with secrets unearthed and confrontations made that return the past to the spotlight.
Robert Askins is a writer whose work emerged in New York a decade ago and cemented his place as a rising star. With Hand To God he has found particular success, with its numerous Tony Award-nominations a testament to its popularity and the strength of his writing.
And amongst those hoping that this success will be felt on these shores is Harry Melling, the young actor best known for playing Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter series of films. He has also made his way to television screens in the likes of Merlin but audiences headed to the Vaudeville Theatre will be happy to know that he has stage experience as well, with credits like King Lear at the Chichester Festival Theatre, The Hothouse at the Trafalgar Studios and Mother Courage And Her Children at the National Theatre, amongst others.
Performer Janie Dee has also amassed various credits, like The Seagull at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and Ah Wilderness at the Young Vic.
Now he plays Jason in Hand To God. The production follows up Bill Bailey’s show Limboland and the Christmas run of The Gruffalo when it opens at the Vaudeville Theatre on Friday 5th February 2016.
