It is time to revisit a classic stage musical as Guys And Dolls, the fantastic story of con-men and wagers in prohibition-era America, continues in the West End. With music and lyrics from Frank Loesser and a book by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling, it is a story that has stood the test of time, from its high profile premiere on Broadway in the 1950s to its numerous revivals around the world in the decades-since.
Now it lands at the Phoenix Theatre under the direction of Gordon Greenberg and with musical direction from Gareth Valentine. It is a transfer both from the Chichester Festival Theatre, one of the best locations to scout out future West End hits, and the Savoy Theatre, where it played until March 2016.
The story of Guys And Dolls centres on Nathan Detroit, a con man in the big city during the prohibition. Illegal activities, wagers and engagements are the name of the day as an array of characters enters the picture like Sky Masterton, Sarah and Detroit’s fiancé Miss Adelaide. If he doesn’t marry the latter soon, then he could be out of luck.
The show is also famous for featuring an array of musical numbers that have become as much a part of popular culture as the West End. With Luck Be A Lady and beyond, these songs are known even to those unfamiliar with the hit show.
In fact they have undoubtedly contributed to its ongoing success, with crowds as eager to hear these numbers as they are to witness the journey of Nathan Detroit through the prohibition. This popularity shows no sign of slowing down soon, so expect audiences to continue to sing along to songs like More I Cannot Wish You and others well into the future.
Guys And Dolls lands at the Phoenix Theatre in a year that will boast many high profile shows, including Harry Potter And The Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre (starring Jamie Parker, who has played Sky Masterson at the Savoy Theatre and Chichester Festival Theatre) and The End Of Longing.
But for those looking for an iconic classic, they will undoubtedly turn to shows like Guys And Dolls, continuing at the Phoenix Theatre from March 2016.
