In the summer of 2017, audiences headed to the Old Vic Theatre to witness the latest from Conor McPherson and now this becomes the latest in a long line of successful productions to transfer to the West End.
McPherson is the Irish playwright known for plays like The Weir and for this show he is aided by the work of singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. The result is Girl From The North Country, which will utilise McPherson’s storytelling skills alongside Dylan’s music to craft something that has already resonated with audiences in London.
Girl From The North Country takes audiences to Duluth, a town next to Lake Superior located in the US state of Minnesota. It is here that a range of characters come into our company as they arrive at a guest house with a variety of problems. In the midst of the Great Depression of the 1930s we meet lonely individuals and families whose hope might be one person who know how to find a way out.
With Bob Dylan’s classic songs propelling the plot along, this will be an unmissable part of the West End theatre scene in 2018 as the show aims to repeat the success it felt south of the Thames at the Old Vic Theatre.
But then this success has come to be expected with Conor McPherson and one only has to look at his impressive back catalogue to see that. The acclaimed playwright has found many fans from both the stage and screen, making him a highly accomplished artist. He first emerged with the play Rum And Vodka in the early 1990s and it was The Weir, later in the same, decade that really put him on the map, landing him a Laurence Olivier Award and propelling him into the spotlight. He has also penned the likes of The Seafarer, The Night Alive and films like The Actors.
So it is clear to see why Girl From The North Country will stand out even during a season of high profile shows in the West End and around the capital. So make sure you keep a close eye on this production as it plays in Theatreland.
Girl From The North Country makes its appearance at the Noël Coward Theatre from Thursday 11th January 2018 (with previews beginning on Friday 29th December 2017).
