It’s time to take a trip back in time to the 1960s and hear some wonderful R&B songs as Dreamgirls, the hit Broadway musical, finally lands in the West End. Casey Nicholaw will direct the production and in the process introduces Theatreland audiences to Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen’s beloved story of hard work and fame in a tough music industry.
Amongst the names bringing new life to the well known characters is Amber Riley. She makes her way to the West End as Effie White on the back of her success in the hit television show Glee and follows in the footsteps of other well known performers.
In addition to entertaining audiences on the hit US series, she has also been seen in the American version of Strictly Come Dancing and has made numerous other television appearances as well. It ensures a familiar face on the stage of the Savoy Theatre when the show opens in November 2016.
In Dreamgirls we are introduced to an all-girl group called the Dreams. They have emerged from the Chicago music scene in the 1960s and we witness their rise to the top, with all of the hurdles along the way as they attempt to navigate the industry and become stars.
But the show is not just known for its story, it is also known for the musical numbers that have been celebrated ever since its 1981 premiere in New York. I’m Telling You I’m Not Going won awards back its time, with audiences and critics responding positively to the Effie White-centred number. So fans will be glad to know that the song is in safe hands with the casting of Amber Riley for this coveted role.
Other songs include Got To Be Good Times, One Night Only, I Meant You No Harm, Only The Beginning and more.
So in a year that brings an array of anticipated Broadway musicals to the West End, including the Prince Edward Theatre’s Aladdin, Dreamgirls will stand out as a particularly anticipated production featuring talented performer.
It opens at the West End’s Savoy Theatre in November and no doubt audiences will be flocking to pick up tickets and experience a true classic.
