Miguel de Cervantes’ iconic novel has been the staple of literary circles for over 400 years  nd continues to find new fans around the world, so it is no wonder that this adaptation of the tale by the Royal Shakespeare Company proved to be such a success at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Similarly, it is little surprise to see the production gain a West End transfer, which will see both David Threlfall and Rufus Hound head to the Garrick Theatre under the direction of Angus Jackson. Theatregoers in London will thus have the opportunity to experience an iconic comic adventure featuring some well known characters.

Cervantes’ novel, which has been adapted for the stage by James Fenton, centres on the character of Alonso Quixano (Threlfall), who adopts the moniker of Don Quixote when he becomes obsessed with defending chivalry and becoming a romantic hero like those he has read in his favourite books. The comic tale, set in Spain in the Middle Ages, sees him recruit the farmer Sancho Panza (Hound) to force the world into his own romantic, unrealistic, image.

It is an influential text and one that has inspired many other famous pieces of literature since it first emerged at the beginning of the 17th century. So expect it to turn a few heads when it opens at the Garrick Theatre.

After all, you don’t attract names like David Threlfall and Rufus Hound for nothing. The performers have a range of credits to their names and are regular faces on the nation’s stages. Threlfall is, of course, best known for television’s Shameless, but has theatre credits dating back to the 1970s. In recent decades his work has included Don Quixote at the Swan Theatre, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me at the Ambassadors Theatre, Blue/Orange at the Duchess Theatre and Tartuffe at the National Theatre, amongst many many others.

So expect big things as the Garrick Theatre becomes the home of a literary classic, with top performers and behind-the-scenes artists working to bring James Fenton’s adaptation to life in the capital.

Don Quixote runs at the West End’s Garrick Theatre from Thursday 8th November 2018 (previews from Saturday 27th October 2018).
