It is time to have the time of your life in London’s West End as the hit musical Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage makes a welcome return to the capital this Christmas. Briefly running through December, the stage adaptation of the hit movie will play at the Phoenix Theatre, where it will undoubtedly capture hearts as a romantic story plays out with plenty of raunchy dance moves!
Dirty Dancing explores the love affair between dance instructor Johnny Castle (Lewis Griffiths – following in the footsteps of the late Patrick Swayze) and ‘Baby’ Houseman (Katie Hartland). Audiences also get a wonderful rendition of the popular song (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life alongside other toe-tapping musical numbers.
The show takes us back to the early 1960s when ‘Baby’ is heading into the Catskill Mountains, New York, for a family holiday. Whilst there she meets Johnny and experiences the dance moves that open her eyes to a whole new world and as the relationship between them blossoms she will have to face her disapproving family.
The original film was released in 1987 and starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the lead roles. It has stood the test of time and remains a favourite of audiences around the world so when this stage adaptation played in the West End all eyes were on the Aldwych Theatre (and later the Piccadilly Theatre) where it played. With that in mind its return to the capital at the Phoenix Theatre can’t come soon enough!
Catch Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage this Christmas at the Phoenix Theatre. It opens on Tuesday 6th December 2016.
