The Harold Pinter Theatre tackles a powerful and eye opening topic this summer as it becomes the new home of Nina Raine’s play Consent, which played to critical success at the Dorfman National Theatre last year.

The West End venue has been the home of some high profile shows over the years, tackling comedies, circus acts and more serious fare at times, with The Birthday Party and Cirque Berserk amongst the shows on offer in 2018. Its latest show takes a look at a contentious subject matter whilst injecting it with humanity, humour and thought-provoking ideas.

The result is likely to be one of the most interesting shows of the year as Roger Michell directs a cast that includes Stephen Campbell Moore Heather Craney, Claudie Blakley and Adam James.

The story centres on the topic of consent as two friends – Edward and Tim – are barristers on opposing sides of a rape case. It is a complex matter already, with many factors to consider, but these matters get even more complex when it frames their own dramas in their personal lives. Consent sees these characters confront their own ideals head-on as their relationships are explored not only with each other but also with those around them.

It’s easy to see how this show turned many heads when it played at the Dorfman Theatre, with audiences and critics enthralled by its narrative. This is thanks not only to Nina Raine’s wonderful script – her latest after Tribes at the Royal Court Theatre and Rabbit at the Trafalgar Studios – but also the direction of Roger Michell.

Michell, who also directed Tribes, is a versatile director whose work has spanned the stage and screen. He has been responsible for many shows since the late 1970s, including Farewell To The Theatre at the Hampstead Theatre, Rope at the Almeida Theatre and Birthday at the Royal Court Theatre. His screen work, meanwhile, has included world-famous films like Notting Hill and Hyde Park On Hudson.

In tackling Consent his work now lands in front of another crowd of theatregoers. Nina Raine’s acclaimed show runs at the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre from Tuesday 29th May 2018 (with previews from Friday 18th May 2018).
