Audiences visiting the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in recent years have had many chances to witness the retellings of classic stories on the stage, whether it was the fantastic production of “Oliver” or the recent run of “Shrek the Musical”, and now there will be another well known tale rewoven into a West End hit. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is set to land at the venue from May 2013 and in doing so it is likely that audiences will have another famous hit on the hands.

But in addition to monikers like Charlie Bucket and Willy Wonka, this show has another two famous names to attract audiences – Sam Mendes and Douglas Hodge. The former is the high profile film director who brought us 2012’s James Bond movie “Skyfall” and the latter a well known West End performer who appeared in “La Cage Aux Folles”.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical” is famously based on the novel by Roald Dahl and it introduces us to Charlie, who wants nothing more than to visit the mysterious chocolate factory run by the eccentric Willy Wonka. So when a competition is revealed that will grant the recipients of golden tickets the chance to tour the whole building, he leaps at the chance to discover them, hidden in select packs of Wonka Chocolate.

Then when Charlie finds his prize, he and Grandpa Joe head to the factory, where a magical world awaits.

The story is not only well known for the novel, but also for its two big screen adaptations that saw Gene Wilder take on the role of Wonka in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.

Actor Douglas Hodge has enjoyed a stand-out career as an actor, having appeared in a great deal of West End shows. His best known is the mentioned “La Cage Aux Folles” at the Playhouse Theatre and Menier Chocolate Factory, whilst other credits include “Guys and Dolls” at the Piccadilly Theatre and hits with the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” begins its run proper at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Tuesday 25th June 2013 (with previews from Saturday 18th May 2013).
