The return of Cats to the West End is news that is welcomed in many parts of the capital. The successful musical, which originally ran at the New London Theatre from 1981 to 2002, then at the London Palladium from 2014 to 2015, will introduce a new generation of London theatregoers to the story of the Jellicle Cats. It will also allow audiences to witness reinterpretations of some of the famous musical numbers, with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber updating some of the songs ahead of its last appearance in the capital starting in 2014.

The creative team is an impressive one, with Sir Trevor Nunn once again directing (as he did last year alongside Chrissie Cartwright) and following up his work during Cats’ record-breaking run at the New London Theatre.

The musical takes its cues from a book of poetry by T.S. Eliot titled Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats and introduces us to the Jellicle Cats. This group meets annually at the Jellicle Ball and it is here that they gather to hear the words of the wise Old Deuteronomy, who has a big announcement to make. He is going to inform them of the identity of the cat who will be granted access to The Heaviside Layer, where they will be reborn.

The show features famous musical numbers like Memory, The Naming Of Cats, The Moments Of Happiness, Mungojerrie And Rumpleteazer, The Awful Battle Of The Pekes and The Journey To The Heaviside Layer, among others, and these have been a big part of the show’s appeal.

The original production opened at the New London Theatre in 1981 and during its two decades in the capital became the longest-running musical. This has since been surpassed by both The Phantom Of The Opera and Les Misérables, among others, but it is clear that Cats is still regarded as one of the most famous and inspirational shows in the world. This is apparent not only from its Broadway version, the multitude of other productions to have appeared worldwide, and the various awards it has to its name.

The London Palladium once again welcomes Cats to its stage late in 2015 when it opens on Friday 23rd October.
