Simon Callow returns to the West End this Christmas as he brings his one-man performance of Ebenezer Scrooge back to the Arts Theatre. A Christmas Carol will transport audiences to 19th century London for a Dickensian time at the theatre that will have to be seen to be believed.
As one of the country’s most renowned performers, Callow will surely attract audiences from across the country as he plays Charles Dickens’ most famous character. Considering the success the production felt during the 2011 Christmas season this is pretty much guaranteed!
After all it is a story familiar to all. Ebenezer Scrooge is the crotchety old man in Victorian England, who forces his employees to work on Christmas Day and utters the famous phrase “Bah, humbug” at the very mention of the seasonal holiday. But he is soon going to learn the error of his ways as he is visited by a series of ghosts on the night before Christmas. The ghosts of past, present and future will expose him to the sad reality of his life and he might just be a changed man come the big day.
A Christmas Carol is always a welcome addition to the West End landscape, as shown by Callow’s return from his 2011 run of performances, and it has regularly drawn some big names over the last century or so. Jim Broadbent was also amongst these big names to take on the role of Scrooge in recent times, playing the part in A Christmas Carol at the Noël Coward Theatre in 2015.
But this time it is Callow’s turn once again as A Christmas Carol runs at the Arts Theatre from Thursday 8th December 2016.
